How do you charge your Nissan LEAF?
Most people will charge their electric vehicle (EV) at home. Charging is simple – you connect your electric car to a power source and the 3 LEDs on the dashboard will let you know the current status of your charge. To stop charging the lithium-ion battery of your Nissan LEAF just unplug the cable.

Standard Charging
With a Home Charging Unit
The safer and most convenient method for standard charging is with a Home Charging Unit installed by Nissan's home charging partner, British Gas.
What is a Home Charging Unit?
A Home Charging Unit is a wall-mounted 16AMP charging system hardwired on a dedicated circuit. Nissan's recommended Home Charging Unit for your LEAF ensures:
- Faster charging¹ performance thanks to a permanent 16A current supply (full charge from empty in approximately 8 hours)
- A certified and warranted installation complying with local IET codes of practice and industry safety standards. British electrical.
How to acquire a Home Charging Unit for your Nissan LEAF?
Your local EV dealer can provide full details of the home charging solutions offered by British Gas, who can visit your home or workplace to survey and install the recommended Home Charging Unit with full warranty on parts and labour.
With the Nissan EVSE cable
A 6-m EVSE cable is supplied as standar with your Nissan LEAF and is primarily intended for use with public charging stations, and provides 10AMP power to fully charge the battery in approximately 12 hours. The cable has a domestic plug on one end and a J1772 connector at the car end.
If you wish to charge your LEAF at home using the EVSE cable, we recommend that British Gas install a dedicated circuit with a domestic socket specifically for home charging your LEAF. This will provide you with the confidence that your installation is fully compliant with British electrical standards and IET codes of practice.

Rapid Charging (direct current 50 kW)
LEAF compatible DC rapid chargers are developed to the ChaDeMo charging standard. This charging method allows you to charge your car from 0% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes.
