ANOTHER FIRST – THE NISSAN LEAF EARNS TOP SAFETY RATING FROM EURO NCAP
Well, how about that?
Those kind but thorough people with clipboards at Euro NCAP (the European New Car Assessment Programme) have awarded the 100% electric Nissan LEAF something amazing - their highest five star car safety rating. And what’s even more incredible is that this is the first electric vehicle to ever earn this distinction. So how brilliantly did it perform? Well, following its stunning performance in the independent organisation’s tough crash tests, this reigning European Car of the Year earned an outstanding 89% rating for adult safety, a superb 83% rating for child protection and an amazing 84% rating for its on-board safety assist systems (which include Electronic Stability Control and a speed limiter as standard). And there’s more. This 100% electric, zero emission, compact family hatchback also earned a higher-than-average 65% score for pedestrian safety, thanks partly to the low nose design and the comparative lack of ‘hard points’ under the bonnet. Anyway, “The Nissan LEAF proves that EVs can achieve the same safety levels as traditional cars. The standard is now set for the next generation of such cars on the European market,” said Euro NCAP Secretary General Michiel van Ratingen.
