Where do you go to find the latest in automobile tech, the newest concept cars pushing the boundaries & drive technology to make even the calmest petrol-heads lose their cool?
You go to the Geneva Motor Show of course.
Since 1905 it has been the annual centre of the international auto world, bringing world-class car manufacturers, journalists and enthusiasts alike together from all walks of life.
The 2019 show was yet another rousing success, with brands taking things to the next level with technology and style, but it was Nissan who truly stole the show.
A New Concept
Unveiling the brand’s latest concept car, the Nissan IMQ seamlessly blends technology, design and performance to produce one of the most eye-catching and impressive concept cars at this year’s motor show.
Boasting a truly unique and futuristic design, the IMQ is the next generation of e-POWER, a 100% electric motor drive system with a fuel engine that delivers instant acceleration with superb handling and responsiveness too.
What is e-POWER you ask? Nissan have taken the drive technology already used in the LEAF, Note and Serena models, and have taken it to the next level. Using an all-wheel-drive (AWD) drive system, which gives independent control over each wheel, the system includes a petrol engine which powers the battery only, not the wheels. This has the benefit of increased fuel efficiency, greater torque delivery and a quieter, smoother ride, like a full electric model. You essentially get the performance of an electric vehicle without having to worry about repeatedly charging the battery, making it a great segue towards full EVs.
So with all this new engine tech, Nissan of course needed to go above and beyond with the IMQ’s design.
A Bright & Stylish Future
With dimensions that put it firmly in the Crossover section, the IMQ’s design delivers more than you may think at first.
Effortlessly clean, the interior is subtly merged with the exterior design thanks to minimal styling, colour matching and continuous details that span the outside and inside of the model.
Traditional Japanese design has been infused with the IMQ, starting with the eye-catching lamella details around the lower exterior panels around the car, extending inside to the flooring and ergonomic seat design. Overall, a wholly minimal approach to styling, influenced by the Japanese less-is-more ethos, has been taken with this concept car, giving it a contemporary style all its own.
It’s spacious, it’s modern, it’s comfortable, it’s smart, it’s everything a car of the future should be, and with such a focus on aerodynamics, Nissan dared to take the design to much bolder heights.
The new V-motion grille, which blends beautifully into the hood and front bumper, creates a striking appearance, with the rest of the body crafted in a similar vein to make this concept vehicle as aerodynamic as it is eye-catching.
And as if that wasn’t enough to excite, the doors have been given a modern overhaul and hinged on the outer edges to reveal a more futuristic design and a fabulously spacious interior that immediately invites you in.
Bursting with Technology
It won’t surprise you to know that all the future technologies showcased in the IMQ is driver-focused, starting with the impressive dashboard unit we’ve already had a look at! Where the IMQ ramps it up is with the use of Nissan’s Invisible-to-Visible (I2V) technology, which amazingly uses a smart 3D interface to merge the ‘real world’ with virtual reality.
Who said the future wasn’t already here?
Nissan’s Omni-Sensing Technology is what connects the IMQ to the advanced sensors located inside and outside the cabin, which when combined with the I2V system gives passengers a beautifully rich mixed-reality experience on the road.
This technology is pushing boundaries, giving drivers the capability to see around corners, visualise specific traffic information and even determine alternative routes as you travel.
This is truly a step into the future, and takes your driving experience straight into the 22nd century.
Adding to the technology bundle, like the renowned Nissan LEAF, the IMQ is equipped with an advanced ProPILOT1 driver assistance system which keeps drivers more secure & safe with a multitude of smart sensors, keeping you more confident on the road whether in you’re in the city or the countryside.
Welcome to the Future
The IMQ is a concept car that’s pushing the boundaries of what can be done in terms of technology, design and performance.
Attention-grabbing and ahead of its time, the Nissan IMQ is the car of the future, and will continue to inspire and excite car enthusiasts for years to come. Or until Nissan produces something even more astounding for next year’s Geneva Motorshow…..
