If you have a company car for private use, you will be liable for benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax that is usually collected from your salary and paid to HMRC.¹ The taxation is based primarily on CO2 emissions, which is used to determine the car's BIK tax banding - these are between 2% and a maximum of 37% for tax year 2022/2023.

To work out the BIK value, the banding percentage is then multiplied by the car's P11D value and your personal tax rate to determine the tax you pay.

To encourage company car drivers to choose cars with lower levels of CO2 the amount you pay is greatly reduced if you choose a car with zero tailpipe emissions.

In April 2021, the UK Government introduced new benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax rates for the tax year 2022/23. This means company car drivers of 100% electric company cars such as the Nissan LEAF pay just 2% BIK. We've worked this out as an average saving of £3,408 in the first year.³ So, why not give yourself the equivalent of a pay rise by switching your petrol or diesel company car to a 100% electric Nissan LEAF.
